Recent Legislation: National Fleet Database Requirement
Under the new legislation outlined in the recently enacted Road Traffic and Roads Act, fleet owners and motor traders in Ireland must upload their vehicle details to the National Fleet Database (NFD) by November 30th.
This requirement specifically applies to vehicles utilising flexible, fleet-style insurance policies, accounting for 8% of vehicles in Ireland. Flexible policies are commonly used by garages, motor traders, and various fleets. Privately owned vehicles are not affected by this legislation.
Once registered, motor traders or fleet owners must download a spreadsheet template from the NFD, add their vehicle registration details, and upload the completed version. The NFD, established in 2022, currently contains data for over 62,000 fleet vehicles, aiding law enforcement, particularly the Gardaí, in identifying uninsured vehicles.
Failure to comply with this legal obligation by the November deadline may result in legal sanctions, including fines and potential prosecution. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) emphasises the importance of this initiative in combating uninsured driving, a significant issue in the country.
David Fitzgerald, CEO of MIBI, urges compliance with the upload requirement, stating that it not only fulfils legal obligations but also contributes to making Irish roads safer.
